Addiction is a serious condition—one that should be addressed with both frankness and compassion. The Mormon Channel accomplished this with its powerful video series called 12 Steps to Change. In this series, recovering addicts share their stories and explain how the Church’s Addiction Recovery Program has helped them overcome addictions to drugs, sex, alcohol, and even food. Austin, a recovering alcoholic, explains, “It’s very hard to describe the empathy, the love, the honesty, the humility that you feel when you walk into that group. They’ve all been there to one degree or another.”

In each video, actors portray these stories with compelling realism while the actual addicts narrate the dramatizations and share their experiences with one of the 12 steps of the program:

  1. Honesty
  2. Hope
  3. Trust in God
  4. Truth
  5. Confession
  6. Change of heart
  7. Humility
  8. Forgiveness
  9. Restitution and reconciliation
  10. Daily accountability
  11. Personal revelation
  12. Service

These inspiring voices provide a universal message of hope, forgiveness, and healing. Sharon, a former crystal meth addict, concludes her story by bearing testimony that “the creator of this universe can not only help you recover but he can literally provide a different life for you, a new heart for you.”

Whether or not you struggle with addiction, these stories will touch your heart, deepen your understanding, and strengthen your resolve to live righteously.

I like how hope is the second step to the process of recovery. I feel like I’m good at being honest with myself about my flaws and sins, but what stops me from overcoming it is just hopelessness. Hope lets us have faith in the Lord and the atonement. And it lets us believe that we can actually overcome our weaknesses and addictions. It’s so powerful, as are all these steps!

  2. This is a great article! In addition to recovering from addictions, I think these steps can also be applied to the process of repenting of a sin. We can be addicted to a particular sin, and these 12 steps can help us overcome it.
